Posture, Relaxation and Gentle Exercise
Having studied Alexander Technique while attending The Juilliard School I came to realise the importance of playing the oboe with good posture and relaxation. The spine, neck and pelvis should be aligned correctly so that the lungs can expand optimally.
I also teach hand and arm exercises to prevent injuries such as tendonitis and repetitive strain. The exercises involve stretching and movement, not use of weights.
The abdominal muscles must be strengthened to enhance endurance and to keep the diaphragm from collapsing. Small movement crunches involving the muscles in front of the diaphragm are encouraged.
General fitness is important for all of us and especially for wind players. I encourage walking, running, jumping and leaping around with abandon.
